Current research projects
Low back pain (LBP) explored from several perspectives:
- Chiropractic and chronic pelvic pain (2006, Kirsten Thorhauge, Jan Hartvigsen, Henrik Wulff Christensen, Axel Forman)
- A research program is being planned in relation to the so-called “maintenance care” concept in chiropractic practice (2006, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde, Lise Hestbæk and practising chiropractors in the Nordic countries).
- A randomized controlled clinical trial of patients at the BackCenter in Ringe (2006, Claus Manniche, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde, Anders Svendsen, Bendt Johansen)
- A randomized controlled clinical trial of patients with Modic changes, comparing the present concept of “keep active” with a novel restitution approach (2006, Claus Manniche, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde, Niels Wedderkopp, Rikke Krüger Jensen)
- Stem cells and degenerated lumbar discs (2005, Tom Bendix)
- Chiropractic patients in Denmark (2005, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson, Jan Hartvigsen et al.)
- A comparison of the “minimal clinically important difference” determined prospectively and retrospectively. (2005, Henrik Lauridsen, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson, Jan Hartvigsen, Claus Manniche
- What are back pain patients’ expectations to treatment? Are they in accordance with what is realistic? (2005, Henrik Lauridsen, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson, Jan Hartvigsen, Claus Manniche)
- Children/adolescents and Low Back Pain. Risk factors and risk groups for actual and/or later LBP (2005, Lise Hestbæk, Per Kjaer, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde, Niels Wedderkopp)
- Groups at risk for Low Back Pain seen from a psycho-social perspective (2005, Lise Hestbæk, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde)
- Subpopulations in non-specific LBP (2005, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde)
- Forces used during spinal manipulation of the lumbar spine (2004, John Triano, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson et al.)
- Chiropractic and exercise for seniors with low back pain. A Randomised clinical trail comparing the effect of chiropractic manual treatment and home exercises versus supervised rehabilitation and home exercises versus home exercises alone in LBP patients aged 65 and older (2004, Gert Brønfort, Roni Evans, Jan Hartvigsen et al.)
- Nordic walking and low back pain. A randomised clinical trail investigating the effect of supervised Nordic walking versus unsupervised Nordic walking versus no intervention. (2004, Lars Morsø, Jan Hartvigsen, Claus Manniche, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde et al.)
- Indications of Modic changes following disc herniation being caused by a slow, anaerobic infection are tested (2004, Hanne Albert, Claus Manniche et al.)
- Modic changes and LBP in the general population – Prevalence, development over time and predictive factors (2004, Tue Secher-Jensen, Claus Manniche et al.)
- Significance of fear-avoidance behaviour. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) on a possible effect of a specific formation of a confidence-based attitude, intending to reduce pain focus, and subsequent more natural movements, versus symptom-based exercises (2003, Pia Havn Sørensen, Tom Bendix et al.)
- MRI studies on those changes causing – and those not causing - LBP/leg pain (2003, Tue Secher-Jensen, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde, Claus Manniche et al.)
- Better backs by better beds? Waterbeds and body-contour conforming mattresses seem superior to firm mattresses as regards LBP (2002, Rasmus Fabricius, Kim Bergholdt, Tom Bendix)
- Reproduction of the biomechanics of standing is intended with spinal compression during supine MRI. Target group is spinal stenosis and soft-disc syndromes. (2002, Rasmus Madsen, Tom Bendix)
- Back and neck pain in old age. The population-based Longitudinal Study of Aging Danish Twins contain extensive interview information on health, lifestyle, physical, and mental function in persons aged 70-102. The back and neck pain studies are dealing with descriptive epidemiology, associated factors, predictors, and heritability (2002, Jan Hartvigsen, Kaare Christensen, Henrik Frederiksen, Hans Christian Petersen)
- Sciatica/disc herniation: Exercises with McKenzie-type or a trunk-stabilising program seem superior to an expectation-based attitude. Modic changes and continuous back pain seem well correlated (2001, Hanne Albert, Claus Manniche et al.)
- Epidemiology: LBP and its relation to lumbar MRI as well as physical activity etc. Two population-based cohorts of approx. 425 persons each, 13-14 and 40 years, respectively. Both are being followed for – so far – 4 years. Trans-sectional correlations and prognostic factors are identified. Modic changes and muscular fat infiltration correlate well to actual back pain (2000, Per Kjær, Charlotte Leboeuf-Yde, Tom Bendix et al.).
Neck pain/whiplash explored from the following perspectives:
- The dose-response relationship between SMT and changes in cervical range of motion - a literature review (2005, Susanne Vejsgaard Vestager, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson et al.)
- Chiropractic and exercise for seniors with neck pain. A Randomised clinical trail comparing the effect of chiropractic manual treatment and home exercises versus supervised rehabilitation and home exercises versus home exercises alone in neck pain patients aged 65 and older (2004, Gert Brønfort, Roni Evans, Jan Hartvigsen et al.)
- Neck pain – prevalence and heredity vrs. environmental factors. A popupulation-based study on significance and prognostic indicators as well as a twin study are carried out (2003, René Fejer, Jan Hartvigsen)
- Prognostic factors of early MRI, eye-movements and bone scintigrafi following whiplash injury (2000, Alice Kongsted, Tom Bendix)
- RCT on light exercises, ‘live as usual’ of stiff neck collar in the acute stage of whiplash-induced neck/arm pain/headache is being carried out (2000, Alice Kongsted, Tom Bendix).
Evaluation of clinical tests:
- Validation of patient specific function scale in patients with thoracic pain (2005, Louise Johannesen, Susanne Helgeson, Henrik Lauridsen)
- Responsiveness of clinical outcome measures. Several of the most common used LBP-variables – Roland Morris-, SF36- and Oswestry Questionaires etc. – are evaluated for clinical significance in relation to treatment effect (2004, Henrik Lauridsen, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson, Jan Hartvigsen, Claus Manniche)
- Translation and validation of the Bournemouth Questionnaire (BQ) in Danish. The BQ is a validated questionnaire assessing pain, physical functional status, social functional status, depression, and coping in LBP patients. (2003, Jan Hartvigsen)
- The relative sensitivity of three different types of clinical outcome measures in chiropractic patients with low back pain (2003, Lene Hare-Mortensen, Henrik Lauridsen, Niels Grunnet-Nilsson)
- Manual examination of the spine: Reproducibility of manual palpation. A systematic, critical literature review (2002, Mette Jensen Stochkendahl, Henrik Wulff Christensen, Jan Hartvigsen, Gert brønfort, Werner Vach, Mitchell Hass).
